The Most Dangerous Question Athletes Ask After Sports
What happens when the thing you've spent most of your life becoming suddenly ends?
For athletes, the transition out of sports isn't simply a career change.
For years, sometimes decades, your sport has provided structure. There was always another practice, another workout, another season, another opponent and another goal.
Then one day, the scoreboard disappears.
And almost immediately, everyone starts asking:
What's next?
What job are you going to take?
What business are you going to start?
Are you going back to school?
Are you going to coach?
Those aren't bad questions.
But I think we're asking them too soon.
Maybe “What's next?” is the wrong question
Before deciding what you're going to do next, there's a much more important question:
Who do I want to become now that I don't have to define myself by my sport?
That's a fundamentally different question.
Because leaving competitive sports doesn't mean you're starting over.
Quite the opposite.
Athletes enter their next chapter carrying years of experiences most people will never have.
You've learned discipline.
You've learned to perform under pressure.
You've failed publicly and gotten back up.
You've been coached.
You've sacrificed.
You've learned to become uncomfortable.
You've spent years working toward outcomes without any guarantee you'd achieve them.
None of that disappears when your playing career ends.
You're not starting over
The challenge isn't replacing your sport as quickly as possible.
It's learning how to translate everything sports gave you into whatever comes next.
Your athletic career was an important part of your story.
It just doesn't have to be the final chapter.
That's one of the reasons I created Athlete5.
Athlete5 is focused on helping current and former elite athletes intentionally navigate the transition into what's next by examining five critical areas of life:
Purpose. Mental health. Physical health. Spiritual grounding. Relationships.
Because the goal isn't simply finding another job or another achievement to chase.
It's building a life after sports that is every bit as meaningful as the one you built during them.
